0. Exam snapshot (read first)

  • Format: Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), 100-125 multiple-choice + advanced item questions, 2 hours, passing scaled score 700/1000.
  • Domains (current October 1, 2025 outline):
    1. Security Principles - 26%
    2. Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery & Incident Response Concepts - 10%
    3. Access Controls Concepts - 22%
    4. Network Security - 24%
    5. Security Operations - 18%
  • A new outline takes effect September 1, 2026 with renamed domains (Security Governance, IAM Concepts, Networking & Cloud Security, SecOps + IR). If your exam is before Sep 1 2026, you are on the 5-domain weights above.
  • Fee: $199 USD. The famous “$50 / free exam” One Million pledge has ended for new takers in most regions.

Honest meta-finding from Reddit/ISC2 community/Medium passes: The official (ISC)² practice questions in the free training are materially easier than the real exam. People who passed by relying only on (ISC)² materials are the exception, not the rule. The exam is heavily “best answer” / managerial wording, not rote recall. Plan accordingly.

1. (ISC)²’s own free self-paced training (the baseline)

  • URL: ISC2 CC Online Self-Paced Training (the course itself is delivered on the Obrizum adaptive platform once you enroll).
  • What’s in it: 5 modules (one per domain), short videos, case-study “TV show” videos that follow a fictional org, pre/post assessments, knowledge checks. Includes free official CC Flash Cards (cloud.connect.isc2.org/cc-flashcards) and a free CC Knowledge-Check Quiz (cloud.connect.isc2.org/cc-quiz).
  • Cost: $0 - this is genuinely free, no hidden exam fee anymore (the $50 free-exam promo from the One Million pledge is mostly over, but the self-paced training itself is still free).
  • Time: 6-8 hours for the full course. The case-study videos are long and the interview videos are widely panned.
  • Quality (honest): The content is broad and decent but the practice questions are much easier than the real exam. Multiple people who failed report that ~75-85% of real exam questions felt harder / scenario-based than anything in (ISC)²’s own quizzes. The course is a good vocabulary primer, not a finishing school.

2. Free resources - ranked

2.2 ★ Network Wizkid (Kelvin Charles) - CC YouTube series (FREE)

  • What it is: Clean, organized walkthrough of the full CC syllabus, plus longer CISSP content. Kelvin holds the CC and CISSP, so credibility is high.
  • Time: ~3-4 hours for CC content.
  • Quality: Less viral than Prabh Nair but tightly structured; often recommended as a complement because Nair teaches you the exam, Wizkid teaches you the topic.
  • Verdict: Use as a domain-knowledge refresh, especially for Network Security (Domain 4) where most people over- or under-prepare.

2.3 ★ Cloud Guru Amit - CC YouTube playlist + free Udemy practice test (FREE)

2.4 Free practice exams (no signup, ranked by quality)

  2. CertPreps - certpreps.com/exams/cc - 3 free full-length mocks, weighted to real exam, scenario-based reasoning. Best free mock overall for the CC today; passes consistently cite it.
  3. Courseiva - courseiva.com mock exam - 900+ questions, 6-domain mix, timed simulation, free, no signup. Good for stamina drills.
  4. EveryExamPrep - everyexamprep.com CC practice - 65 free questions, verified against the 2025 outline, instant feedback.
  5. CareerEmployer practice test - careeremployer.com practice test - 260+ questions, weighted to the 5-domain blueprint, free, no signup.
  6. Mastery Exam Prep - masteryexamprep.com CC free practice - 100 free questions, per-domain drills, quick-review page.
  7. GitHub free resource list - dmtkfs/cc-exam - the actual “how I passed in 1 week” GitHub gist with curated links to most of the above.

Honest quality note on free practice tests: The free ones (CertPreps, Courseiva, CareerEmployer) are noticeably closer to the real exam than the (ISC)² own practice quizzes, but they’re still a half-step easier. They are excellent for content coverage and identifying weak domains, not for simulating the “two answers that look right” ambiguity of the real CAT.

2.6 Community resources (free)

  • ISC2 CC Study Group forum - community.isc2.org CC board - search “passed” for the most honest post-mortems. The “CC exam was strange” and “Passed the CC” threads are gold.
  • Reddit: there’s no active dedicated r/ISC2; pass stories appear in r/cybersecurity, r/CompTIA, r/ITCareerQuestions. The Reddit-style “Resources + Tips for ISC2 CC” gist (gist 691c9db35fa194721f2a617c250fd747) is a community-vetted resource list.
  • Discord: (ISC)² does not run an official CC Discord. Cybersecurity Discords (e.g. HackTheBox, TryHackMe, The Cyber Mentor) sometimes have CC-prep channels but quality varies and they’re not CC-specific.

3. Paid resources - ranked

  • What’s in it: 19 hours of video, 1,700 questions (1,200 on Udemy), 124-page study guide, 36-page quick sheets, mnemonics, 24 mind maps, 2,500 flashcards, 2,500-word glossary, ThorBot AI chatbot, 700+ study links. Updated for Sep 2026 outline if you’re taking the exam later, but the original 5-domain content is still inside.
  • Cost: $19-$25 on Udemy (sale price, normal ~$50); $50+ lifetime bundle on ThorTeaches.com directly with full feature set. The direct bundle is the only one with the chatbot, flashcards, and full 1,700 question bank.
  • Time: 12-18 hours to do the videos + study guide; 4-6 hours for the practice questions. Total ~20-25 hours for a 1-week sprint.
  • Quality: 4.6/5 across 15.3K+ ratings on Udemy; 74K+ students. Most-passed course on the market for CC. Teaches “question deconstruction” (how to read (ISC)² “best answer” questions), which is the actual skill you need. Critiques: course is verbose, networking domain is light.
  • Verdict: If you have 1 week and $20, this is the single best spend. Cited in nearly every “I passed in 2-3 weeks” post I found.

3.2 ★ Mike Chapple - LinkedIn Learning CC (PAID, often available free with library card)

  • What’s in it: 4h 57m video course covering all 5 domains in deeper technical detail than Thor, plus separate practice exams on LinkedIn.
  • Cost: Requires LinkedIn Premium (~$39.99/mo) - but most public libraries (US/UK/CA) give free LinkedIn Learning access with a library card (check your local library here). If you have a library card, this is effectively free.
  • Quality: 4.9/5 across 8,123 ratings. Mike Chapple is the author of the official (ISC)² Sybex CISSP study guide, so domain knowledge is bulletproof. Best for solidifying concepts, less for exam-question technique.
  • Verdict: Pair Mike Chapple (concepts) + Prabh Nair (exam logic) for a no-cost premium prep. Most passed users cite both.

3.3 Pocket Prep CC (PAID mobile)

  • What’s in it: 800 multiple-choice questions across the 5 domains, plus 26 other IT/cyber exams in the bundle. 30-60 free questions; full access via subscription.
  • Cost: $20.99/month · $49.99/3-month · $124.99/year. (Old one-time $20-$30 per-exam model is gone.)
  • Quality (honest): Good for commute-length drill sessions and identifying weak domains. App Store 4.6-4.8 stars, but recurring negative reviews complain that some questions are ambiguous, not representative of the real exam, or have wrong/ambiguous answers (especially for CISM, with some CISA users saying the same). For CC specifically, the 4.6/5 review base is more positive, but treat the explanations as study material, not gospel.
  • Verdict: Worth it if you commute or have 5-minute dead time. Not a substitute for Thor + practice mocks. Don’t buy the year subscription for a one-cert cram.

3.4 Paulo Carreira & Andree Miranda - 6 Full Practice Exams (PAID, ~$15 on Udemy)

  • What’s in it: 6 timed, full-length CC mock exams, each 100 questions, with detailed explanations.
  • Cost: ~$12-$15 on Udemy (always on sale).
  • Quality: The most-cited “game-changer” practice exam pack by recent passers. Covers most question archetypes you’ll see in the real test and forces you into “what is (ISC)² actually asking” mode.
  • Verdict: If you’re skipping Thor, do these 6 mocks. If you have Thor, these are an excellent second pass.

3.5 Ehab Badawi - 700+ Practice Questions (PAID, ~$12 on Udemy)

  • Quality: Second-most-recommended CC practice pack; useful for raw question volume. Lower signal than Paulo Carreira per Reddit feedback.
  • Verdict: Optional, only if you’ve exhausted Paulo Carreira.

3.6 Books

  • Official (ISC)² CC textbook (print/ebook) - sold via the (ISC)² store for ~$24-$30. Buy it if you retain better from text than video. Many passers say it’s beneficial but the eTextbook format is clunky and the print version is sparse.
  • Mike Meyers / Total Seminars - Total Seminars CC Practice Exams on LinkedIn Learning - Mike Meyers himself is the CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+ king; for CC, his CC content is mostly Mike Chapple on LinkedIn Learning (different person). Total Seminars publishes practice exam courses on LinkedIn for CC; quality is OK but not a top recommendation. See the LinkedIn Learning CC Cert Prep page above.
  • Old Sybex / Pearson CC guides: avoid anything pre-2023. The CC exam launched August 2022 and the outline has shifted twice (most recent Oct 1 2025). Pre-2024 books are likely stale on Domain 2 (BC/DR/IR) and may not reflect the 2025 weighting.

3.7 What about (ISC)² Instructor-Led Training?

(ISC)² has instructor-led CC classes via Official Training Partners (~$500-$1,500). Skip for a 24-hour cram - overkill and the same content is in the free self-paced course.

Trap to avoid: A 90% score on (ISC)² own practice or ChatGPT mocks does not mean you will pass. People who failed with 95%+ on AI mocks is a recurring story (see Hemanth Mouli’s fail post-mortem). Use AI mocks for breadth, but calibrate against CertPreps / Paulo Carreira / Thor to gauge real readiness.

5. Study resources by timeline

5.1 1-day cram (24 hours) - the user’s situation

Best single move: Prabh Nair’s CC YouTube playlist + CertPreps free mocks.

Hour-by-hour:

  1. Hour 0-2: Watch the (ISC)² official CC Knowledge-Check Quiz once at cloud.connect.isc2.org/cc-quiz. Get a baseline.
  2. Hour 2-6: Prabh Nair’s CC playlist at 1.5x. Take notes on the 4 ISC² Code of Ethics canons (in order), CIA triad, AAA, defense in depth, OSI model layer names, and the 5 domains with their weights. These are the highest-yield mnemonics.
  3. Hour 6-8: CareerEmployer flashcards, “Type” mode, 100 cards.
  4. Hour 8-10: CertPreps mock #1 (timed, 100 Q, 2h, no notes). Score and note your 3 weakest domains.
  5. Hour 10-11: CareerEmployer free study guide - read only the modules for the 3 weakest domains.
  6. Hour 11-12: CertPreps mock #2. Score and look at the misses.
  7. Hour 12-14: Break + sleep ≥ 8 hours. Do not cram past midnight. Memory consolidates during sleep; cramming till 3am costs you more than it gains.
  8. Morning of exam: Quick scan of mnemonics, Prabh Nair’s “summary before exam” video, light breakfast. Stop studying 90 minutes before the exam.

5.2 1-week sprint (5-7 days, ~3 hours/day)

  1. Day 1: (ISC)² free self-paced training (modules 1-3).
  2. Day 2: (ISC)² free training (modules 4-5) + Prabh Nair videos on the 2 weakest domains.
  3. Day 3: Mike Chapple LinkedIn Learning (free via library card) - full course.
  4. Day 4: Thor Teaches (Udemy, $20) - videos at 1.5x, focus on his “question deconstruction” lectures.
  5. Day 5: Paulo Carreira & Andree (Udemy, ~$15) - mocks 1-3.
  6. Day 6: Pocket Prep (1 month, $20.99) - 100-question timed tests on weakest domain.
  7. Day 7: CertPreps free mocks + final review of mnemonics.

5.3 2-4 weeks normal pace

Follow Tech Exam Lexicon’s 30-day study plan for structure. The same resource stack as the 1-week sprint, but stretched: read the official CC textbook alongside the videos, do spaced-repetition flashcards daily, and take 1 full mock per week.

5.4 6+ weeks deep dive

Add the official (ISC)² eTextbook + Thor’s $50 direct bundle (mind maps + glossary + chatbot) + ISC2 community + the Edusum/CertPreps question bank. Most of this is overkill if your goal is just to pass; the deep dive only pays off if you plan to continue into Security+ or CISSP.

6. Traps, outdated resources, and over-priced landmines

  • Pre-2024 YouTube videos and books - likely reflect the pre-Oct 2025 outline. Domain 2 weight has shifted and several topics have been added. Prabh Nair, Network Wizkid, Cloud Guru Amit have all updated their playlists in 2024-2025. If a CC resource hasn’t been updated since 2022 or early 2023, skip it.
  • The “$50 / free exam” One Million pledge - ended for new takers in most regions in mid-2025. The exam is now $199. If a YouTube video says “the exam is free”, it’s outdated. The self-paced training itself is still free.
  • ChatGPT / Claude / Copilot for practice questions - Tempting and abundant, but most candidates who failed while scoring 95%+ on AI mocks said the real exam wording is much trickier. Use AI for concept explanations, not for practice scoring. See Hemanth Mouli’s fail post-mortem linked above.
  • The (ISC)² self-paced training alone - multiple failure stories trace back to relying only on this. The course is good, the practice questions inside it are not representative of exam difficulty.
  • Old Quizlet sets that look authoritative - the “ISC2 CC” set with 173 terms is a fine reference but several terms are paraphrased; Quizlet set 779965480 (the most-referenced) has known errors per its own users.
  • $500+ instructor-led (ISC)² training - overkill for an entry-level exam. Free content covers 90% of the value.
  • Buying Pocket Prep’s annual subscription for a single cert - $124.99/year is poor ROI if CC is your only goal. Use the 1-month at $20.99.
  • Dump sites and “exam brain dumps” - illegal, against (ISC)² policy, and the CAT format means even memorized dumps rarely match the actual items shown.
  • The “How to deconstruct CC questions” YouTube video (o5wFMa5_jZw) is a 2025-dated strategy video worth 15 minutes of your time the night before the exam.
